S.1422 An Act relative to Narcan availability in schools

Would require:

  • Naloxone (Narcan) to be available in the nurse’s office at every public high school in Massachusetts

  • Public high schools offer naloxone training to students.

S.2863 An Act regarding the instruction of lifesaving skills in schools

If a school offers health curriculum, it must include information on:

  • Opioids & Opioid Use Disorder

  • Overdose risks such as fentanyl contamination

  • How to respond to an opioid overdose

  • Where to find naloxone (and de-stigmatizing it?)

  • Good Samaritan Laws*

S.2756 An Act to support college students in recovery

Would require public higher education institutions to:

  • Provide naloxone training to students, faculty & staff

  • Have naloxone available on campus

  • Provide recovery-focused housing (if the institution offers housing)

*Massachusetts Good Samaritan Law

The Massachusetts Good Samaritan Law protects overdose victims, and those who call 9-1-1, from charge, prosecution and conviction for possession or use of controlled substances.

It does not protect overdose victims and those who call 9-1-1 from:

  • Losing their public housing

  • Being arrested on prior warrants (if the police decide to run names of those on-scene)

  • Becoming involved with the Department of Children and Families (if children are present)
